NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Suspected Counterfeit Toothpaste in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical public alert regarding the circulation of unregistered and suspected counterfeit toothpaste products in Kaduna State. This warning highlights significant potential health risks to consumers, as these items have not undergone mandatory regulatory checks.

Discovery of Fake Products

In a public alert identified as No. 022/2026, NAFDAC revealed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint about the distribution of fake toothpaste falsely associated with the well-known Colgate brand. Following a thorough investigation, agency officials visited a retail outlet where the products were reportedly being sold. During this inspection, they discovered two suspicious items labelled as Coglaet ActivGel 100g and Coglaet Herbal 100g.

The agency confirmed that these products are neither registered nor approved by NAFDAC, raising serious concerns about their safety, quality, and authenticity. According to NAFDAC, the shop owner claimed the items were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative but was unable to provide any documentation or proof of purchase. As a result, the agency promptly confiscated the products from the outlet to prevent further distribution.

Health Risks and Ongoing Investigations

NAFDAC emphasised that unregistered and counterfeit regulated products, such as these toothpaste items, do not undergo the required quality assurance and regulatory checks. This omission makes them potentially harmful to public health, as they may contain unsafe ingredients or fail to meet hygiene standards. The agency added that investigations are currently ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for distributing these fraudulent products.

In response to this threat, NAFDAC has urged consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of substandard or falsified products. Reports can be made through multiple channels, including visiting the nearest NAFDAC office, using the toll-free line at 0800-162-3322, or sending an email to [email protected].

Commitment to Public Safety

NAFDAC reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only certified and safe products are available in the Nigerian market. This incident underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in protecting consumers from harmful counterfeit goods. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
