NDLEA arrests Chinese grandma with 31kg cannabis at Lagos airport

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 63-year-old Chinese grandmother, Ting Hung Kiong, for attempting to smuggle a large consignment of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, into Nigeria. The arrest took place at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement released on Sunday, May 24, 2026. According to the statement, the Chinese national, who has naturalized in Malaysia, was arrested on Sunday, May 17, 2026, upon her arrival from Thailand via Dubai, United Arab Emirates, aboard an Emirates Airline flight.

She was intercepted by NDLEA operatives attached to the Terminal 2 Arrival Hall of the MMIA. Investigation revealed that the suspect traveled from Malaysia to Thailand and then to Nigeria via the UAE, carrying two large travel boxes containing the synthetic cannabis consignment weighing 31.0 kilograms.

During interrogation, the woman, who claims to work as a caregiver in Malaysia, stated that her daughter sponsored her trip from Malaysia to Thailand and subsequently to Nigeria. She further disclosed that she spent two weeks in Thailand before being handed the illicit consignment at the Thailand airport to deliver in Nigeria.

The NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring the safety of Nigerian borders. The suspect is currently in custody and will face charges accordingly.
