NDLEA Finally Apprehends Notorious Drug Kingpin After 13-Year Pursuit

In a significant breakthrough for Nigeria's anti-narcotics efforts, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully captured Reginald Peter Chidiebere, a long-sought drug kingpin who had been evading authorities for thirteen years. The arrest marks the culmination of an extensive manhunt that spanned over a decade and involved multiple international drug shipments.

Decade-Long Fugitive Surrenders to Authorities

According to official statements from NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Chidiebere voluntarily surrendered to Nigerian authorities on February 13, 2026, after finding himself unable to sustain his life in hiding. The suspect had originally been arrested in 2013 for his involvement in shipping banned substances into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

Following his initial arrest and arraignment before Justice Ayokunle Faji of the Federal High Court in Lagos, Chidiebere was granted bail but subsequently disappeared, remaining at large for thirteen years while continuing his alleged criminal activities.

Hotel Raid Uncovers Additional Evidence

In February 2024, NDLEA operatives conducted a follow-up operation at Chidiebere's establishment, the Golden Platinum Hotel and Suites located at No. 16/18 Reginald Peter Chidiebere Street in Okota, Lagos. During this raid, authorities reportedly recovered an additional 2.20 kilograms of narcotics from one of the hotel's guests, Igbuanugo Ebuka ThankGod.

The agency had previously linked Chidiebere to a major 2024 drug shipment from South Africa, where 49.70 kilograms of illegal substances were intercepted at the Lagos airport. This connection further strengthened the case against the fugitive hotelier.

Financial Pressure Forces Surrender

The NDLEA's relentless pursuit included securing interim forfeiture of Chidiebere's hotel property and blocking all bank accounts traced to him since 2024. These financial pressures, combined with the agency's intensified crackdown on drug networks, ultimately made it impossible for Chidiebere to continue evading capture.

Babafemi confirmed that Chidiebere will now face both his original charges from 2013, for which he jumped bail, and fresh charges related to the 2024 narcotics consignments linked to his criminal network.

Broader Crackdown on Drug Networks

This arrest represents part of a larger NDLEA initiative targeting major drug cartels operating within Nigeria. The agency has recently intensified operations against illicit drug trade, including:

  • Intercepting international drug shipments concealed in various items
  • Raiding establishments suspected of facilitating narcotics distribution
  • Apprehending other long-wanted drug kingpins

In a related operation, the NDLEA captured 60-year-old Okpara Chigozie, another major drug cartel leader who had successfully evaded arrest since 2019. These coordinated efforts demonstrate the agency's commitment to dismantling sophisticated drug networks that threaten public safety and national security.

The successful apprehension of Chidiebere after thirteen years sends a clear message that Nigeria's anti-narcotics agencies remain determined to pursue drug traffickers regardless of how long they attempt to evade justice. The case highlights both the challenges of tracking down sophisticated criminal operators and the persistence required to eventually bring them to account for their alleged crimes.
