Nigerian Fugitive Extradited to UK for Murder and Drug Trafficking Charges
The Nigeria Police Force has successfully extradited a fugitive, Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, to the United Kingdom to face serious criminal charges including murder and drug trafficking. This significant international law enforcement operation underscores the commitment of Nigerian authorities to global justice cooperation.
Formal Extradition Request and INTERPOL Involvement
According to a detailed statement released by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Okon Placid on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the extradition process was initiated following a formal request from United Kingdom authorities in September 2024. The INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja played a crucial role in facilitating the operation, coordinating efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect.
The UK authorities had declared Adebiyi wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of 23-year-old Joshua Boadu on June 18, 2018. After the incident, Adebiyi fled to Nigeria in an attempt to evade arrest and prosecution, seeking refuge from international justice.
Additional Drug Trafficking Allegations
Beyond the murder charge, Adebiyi faces serious allegations related to drug trafficking. He is accused of being involved in the supply of crack cocaine, a Class-A controlled substance, between October 2017 and March 2018 in the United Kingdom. These dual charges highlight the severity of the crimes he is alleged to have committed.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings in Nigeria
The fugitive's run from justice ended on January 23, 2025, when operatives of the INTERPOL NCB Abuja executed a successful arrest. Following his apprehension, extradition proceedings were formally initiated at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division, under Suit No. FHC/L/CS/416/2025.
On February 16, 2026, Honourable Justice A.O. Faji granted the application for Adebiyi's extradition, acting in accordance with the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. This judicial approval paved the way for the final phase of the transfer process.
Formal Handover and Police Commitment
Pursuant to the court order and after the execution of a surrender warrant by relevant Nigerian authorities, Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi was formally handed over to United Kingdom law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026. The transfer took place at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, ensuring his return to face diligent prosecution in the UK.
Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening international police cooperation. He emphasized that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives seeking to escape justice in other countries. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-border law enforcement collaboration in tackling serious criminal activities.
