UK Court Sentences 24-Year-Old Nigerian to Life for Murder in Leicester
A Leicester Crown Court in the United Kingdom has handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a 24-year-old Nigerian national, for the brutal murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel. The tragic incident unfolded on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road in Leicester, following a dangerous driving spree by Ahanonu while under the influence of cannabis.
Details of the Fatal Attack
Ahanonu had been driving recklessly around the city centre before crashing his car. He then fled the scene and attacked Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was walking home. The assault resulted in severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, leading to her death two days later. Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary restrained Ahanonu until police arrived, while medical staff provided emergency treatment to the victim.
During his arrest, police discovered dealer bags of cannabis valued at over £3,000 and three iPhones in his car. Ahanonu had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of cannabis with intent to supply. He also assaulted an emergency worker by biting a female police officer.
Investigation and Public Response
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Emma Matts, described the CCTV footage of Ahanonu's driving before the crash as "frightening and disturbing." She emphasized that Patel was unknown to Ahanonu and was simply walking home when subjected to this brutal assault. Matts commended members of the public for their swift actions in restraining Ahanonu and assisting Patel, noting that their efforts were crucial in securing justice for the victim.
The jury found Ahanonu guilty on Monday, March 23, 2026, and he was sentenced on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. His re-arrest on suspicion of murder occurred on June 26, 2025, following Patel's death.
Broader Context of Nigerian Offenders in the UK

Additionally, Nigerian postgraduate student Chiemka Okoronta was sentenced to 10 years in prison for defiling a 17-year-old girl in West Yorkshire on March 25, 2025.
