The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a thirty-seven-year-old man, Opeyemi Olaniyan, for allegedly stabbing Ayomide Oyekunle to death during a violent altercation at a beer parlour in the Agbado area of Ifo Local Council, Ogun State. The incident, which occurred late on Saturday night, stemmed from a dispute over a N25,000 debt, leading to a fatal confrontation that has shocked the local community.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to the state's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oluseyi Babaseyi, the incident was reported by the debtor, Oriade Kehinde, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday. Kehinde stated that while he was at his beer parlour, Opeyemi Olaniyan arrived to demand payment of N25,000 owed to him since the previous year. When Olaniyan did not receive an immediate response, he became violent, breaking a bottle and threatening to stab anyone within the premises.

During the ensuing chaos, as others attempted to prevent Olaniyan from entering the bar, he used the broken bottle to stab Ayomide Oyekunle on the hand and stomach. The victim was immediately rushed to Strong Tower Hospital in Giwa Oke-Aro for urgent medical attention but tragically succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Police Response and Investigation

PPRO Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that the suspect, Opeyemi Olaniyan, has been arrested and is currently in police custody for investigation. The deceased's remains have been deposited at Life Channel Morgue in Olambe for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Babaseyi added that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abeokuta for further investigation and likely prosecution, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating this violent crime.
