Operatives of the Idiroko Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a driver and his guarantor in a foiled cross-border trafficking of a company vehicle into Benin Republic. The suspects are Seun Lawal, 46, and Ademola Oriyomi, 38.
Arrest and Recovery
The two suspects were arrested for conniving to smuggle a stolen company bus into Benin Republic. They were taken into custody following credible intelligence received at about 11:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026. Spokesperson of the Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.
Babaseyi explained that Seun, the driver of the 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus, connived with his guarantor, Ademola, to smuggle the vehicle, earlier declared stolen from Lagos, into the Benin Republic for illegal disposal. He stated that the suspects had positioned the bus at Babaloke area of Idiroko and were preparing to move it across the international border under false pretense.
Police Intervention
Upon receiving the information, the CSP of the Division, Adejuwon Ariyo, mobilized and led a surveillance team to the location, where operatives intercepted the suspects in the course of executing the cross-border movement. Babaseyi said that the operatives, in tactical response, demobilized and intercepted the vehicle by shooting one of its tires, preventing the bus from being taken across the border.
The Police Public Relations Officer noted that prompt intervention led to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of the stolen bus at the scene. “Preliminary investigation revealed that Seun Lawal, a driver, conspired with Ademola Oriyomi, his guarantor, to steal and sell the vehicle in the Benin Republic. The suspects admitted that the proceeds were intended to facilitate their relocation after the illegal transaction,” he said.
Ongoing Investigation
Babaseyi confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody while investigation continues to uncover possible links to broader cross-border vehicle theft syndicates. The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism, vigilance, and tactical precision of CSP Adejuwon Ariyo and the operatives of Idiroko Division for the intelligence interception, demobilization, and recovery of the stolen vehicle.
Ojajuni reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive policing, strengthened border security operations, and sustained efforts aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action within Ogun State and its border corridors. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
