Ogun University Students Storm Police Station in Protest Over Alleged Detention

In a dramatic incident over the weekend, students from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, mobilized in large numbers to storm the Oru-Ijebu Police Division. The students demanded the immediate release of their colleagues, whom they believed were being held in custody at the station. The protest quickly escalated into a tense confrontation with law enforcement officers.

Police Response and Escalation of Violence

According to DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, the students arrived at the police station claiming that some of their peers were detained there. In a swift response, the officers on duty clarified that no students were in custody at the division. However, upon hearing this, the students became agitated and forcefully breached the station gate.

The situation deteriorated as the protesters began throwing stones and bottles at the police personnel. They issued threats to attack the officers and destroy property within the station if their demands were not met. Babaseyi stated that the police had to call for reinforcements, as they were unable to contain the angry crowd using standard procedures.

Use of Teargas and Restoration of Order

To disperse the unruly students, the police resorted to using teargas. Babaseyi explained in a statement: "On Saturday, March 28, 2026, a group of students mobilized to Oru-Ijebu Police Division, claiming some of their colleagues were detained. The Divisional Police Officer confirmed that no student was in the Division’s custody. The students became agitated, breached the station gate, threw stones and bottles, and threatened to attack the police personnel and destroy property. Reinforcements were called and teargas was used to disperse the crowd. Normalcy has since been restored."

The police command has since urged the public, particularly students, to address grievances through lawful and peaceful channels. They reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining professionalism and ensuring public safety in the state.
