Abia Man Killed Days to Wedding, Houses Set Ablaze in Ohafia Crisis
Ohafia Crisis: Groom-to-be Murdered, Properties Destroyed

A tragic incident has thrown the Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State into mourning, following the murder of a young man just days before his planned wedding and the subsequent destruction of properties by rampaging youths.

Details of the Ohafia Crisis

The violence erupted on Friday, January 2, 2026. The victim, identified as Igwe Akuma from the Ndi Uma compound, was killed during the unrest. In a devastating escalation, youths went on to set fire to houses, vehicles, and other valuable property belonging to residents of the community.

Traditional Council Condemns the Violence

In a swift response, the apex traditional body in Ohafia, the Udumeze of Ohafia led by Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, alongside the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, issued a strong statement on Saturday, January 3. The statement vehemently condemned the gruesome murder and the arson attacks.

The council revealed the heartbreaking detail that Mr. Igwe Akuma was on the verge of getting married in a few days before his life was brutally cut short. They declared that there was absolutely no justification for the killing of an Ohafia son, regardless of any provocation, and emphasized that such acts of killing and destruction are a terrible way to begin a new year.

Appeal for Calm and Police Action

The Udumeze of Ohafia Council appealed for calm between the feuding parties, specifically mentioning the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds. They confirmed that they are collaborating with relevant security agencies to prevent the crisis from escalating further.

On the security front, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ohafia Divisional Headquarters reportedly led a team of officers to the scene. Their intervention led to the arrest of some suspects who are currently undergoing interrogation to unravel the full circumstances behind the violence.

The community remains in shock as investigations continue, with many hoping for swift justice and a lasting peace to return to Okon-Aku.
