Ondo Court Remands Man for Public Assault on Woman

A Chief Magistrate's Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a man identified as Jimoh Wasiu for allegedly assaulting a woman and stripping her naked in Oba-Akoko. The defendant was brought before the court by the Ondo State Security Network Agency, commonly known as the Amotekun Corps, on a charge of assault.

Details of the Alleged Offence

Prosecuting counsel, P.O. Nwafor, informed the court that the incident occurred on May 4, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m. at Irefun Quarters, Oba-Akoko. According to the prosecutor, Wasiu allegedly assaulted one Selimat Nasiru by striking her in the face before proceeding to strip her naked in public. This act, the prosecutor stated, contravenes Section 355 of the Criminal Law of Ondo State, 2006.

Defendant's Plea and Bail Application

When the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Adewale Adelakin, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms, assuring that the defendant would not evade trial and would provide dependable sureties. In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. The magistrate further directed that the sureties must be residents within the court's jurisdiction and ordered that their addresses be verified by the court registrar and orderly.

Failure to Perfect Bail

However, the defendant failed to perfect the bail conditions and was subsequently remanded in police custody. The case has been adjourned to June 29, 2026, for further hearing.
