Ondo NUT Demands Safe Schools, Urges Release of Abducted Oyo Colleagues

Teachers in Ondo State on Tuesday held a solidarity rally in Akure, the state capital, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of their colleagues and pupils who were abducted several weeks ago in Oyo State.

Demands for Enhanced Security

The educators urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to urgently bolster the state's security framework, stressing that assaults on teachers and students jeopardize access to education across the nation.

The protest, organized under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ondo State chapter, saw participants march from the Teachers' House through major thoroughfares before converging at the Governor's Office.

Placards and Messages

The demonstrators carried placards with slogans such as "Teachers Teach in Peace," "Secure Every School, Save Every Dream," and "An Attack on Teachers is an Attack on Education."

NUT Chairman's Statement

Comrade Leke Ayodele, NUT Chairman, noted that the incident highlighted the escalating insecurity facing the country and the mounting threats to the safety of learners, educators, and educational establishments.

Expressing concern over the abduction, Ayodele stated: "We strongly condemn this reprehensible act and call on the federal government, the Oyo State Government, and all relevant security agencies to rise to the challenge."

He further emphasized: "As a union committed to the welfare and safety of teachers and learners, we declare unequivocally that enough is enough."

Union's Stance on Kidnapping

"We say no to the kidnapping of teachers, pupils, and other innocent citizens. Our schools and learning environments must be safe, secure, and conducive for quality education," Ayodele added.

"Learning stops where insecurity begins. Protect education from criminals. Teachers deserve security, not fear. Government must wake up and act now."

Government Response

Comrade Bola Taiwo, Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Union Matters and Special Duties, commended the peaceful conduct of the NUT leadership.

"Under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Amotekun Security Network has recruited more personnel. Cordial collaboration with security heads, among others, has helped secure the state," Taiwo said.
