Pastor Roman Samson Arrested Over Death of 13-Year-Old Nancy Peter
A 45-year-old pastor, Roman Samson, has been arrested in Cross River State for allegedly flogging a 13-year-old girl, Nancy Peter, to death. The teenager was accused of stealing N30,000 from her mother, Agnes Peter, in the Obanleku community, Boki Local Government Area.
According to reports, Agnes Peter discovered that N30,000 was missing and confronted her daughter. Nancy allegedly confessed to taking the money, and the mother recovered it from her trousers. On June 1, Agnes took Nancy to Pastor Samson's residence for counseling.
Mother Discovers Daughter Beaten and Rushed to Hospital
Agnes Peter stated that while returning, she met Pastor Samson rushing Nancy to a hospital. She recounted, “I met them on the road. I didn’t know he had beaten her.” Nancy was later confirmed dead at the hospital, sparking outrage among residents.
Pastor Samson admitted flogging the teenager but denied attempting to kill her. He claimed he administered between 13 and 15 strokes of a horsewhip after the theft accusation. The pastor said he became alarmed when the girl grew weak and immediately took her to a medical facility, where she was pronounced dead.
Police Launch Investigation Amid Community Outrage
Police authorities have disclosed that an investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding Nancy’s death. The community has demanded justice for the teenager, and the police are expected to provide updates as the case progresses.
This tragic incident adds to a series of similar cases in Nigeria where individuals have been beaten to death over accusations. In a related incident, a man identified as IK allegedly beat his lover and mother of two to death in Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, and fled after leaving her corpse with their children in a tricycle.
The police continue to probe such cases, including the death of a 12-year-old girl beaten by her father over a family dispute, and other instances of fatal beatings across the country.
