Two Welders Killed, Three Injured in Plateau Filling Station Tank Explosion
A devastating explosion at a filling station in Plateau State has resulted in the tragic deaths of two welders and left three other individuals with serious injuries. The incident occurred on Friday, April 17, 2026, in Daffo town, located within the Bokkos Local Government Area, casting a shadow over the community.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The explosion took place at the Natty Filling Station during maintenance operations on an underground fuel tank. According to Kefas Mallai, the Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, who confirmed the event from Jos, the blast happened while artisans were attempting to repair a leaking section of the tank. "Today, Friday, April 17, 2026, two persons lost their lives and three others were injured when an underground tank exploded during welding work at a filling station in Daffo," Mallai stated.
He identified the deceased as a welder and his apprentice, both of whom were actively working on the tank at the time of the explosion. "The victims were trying to weld a leaking section of the underground tank. They assumed it was safe because there was no fuel in it," Mallai explained, shedding light on the presumed safety conditions that tragically proved fatal.
Immediate Aftermath and Response
The explosion occurred shortly after welding commenced, causing the tank to suddenly erupt in flames that engulfed the surrounding area. This resulted in the instant deaths of the two workers. Three other individuals, believed to be bystanders who had gathered at the scene, sustained varying degrees of injuries from the blast. "The injured have been taken to hospital and are currently receiving treatment," Mallai added, providing an update on the condition of the survivors.
Mallai described the incident as unfortunate and emphasized the need for stricter adherence to safety protocols during maintenance operations at fuel stations. This tragedy underscores the critical importance of following established safety guidelines to prevent such accidents in the future.
Ongoing Investigations and Unanswered Questions
As of the time of reporting, the identities of the victims had not been officially released by authorities. It also remained unclear whether emergency responders and security agencies had visited the scene to conduct investigations or provide further assistance. The lack of immediate official confirmation has left the community in a state of uncertainty and mourning.
This explosion serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with maintenance work in hazardous environments like fuel stations. The call for enhanced safety measures resonates strongly in the wake of this preventable loss of life.
