The Delta State Police Command successfully prevented a major security breach during the New Year crossover, arresting 43 suspected hoodlums in a coordinated midnight operation across Asaba metropolis.
Midnight Operation Thwarts Planned Chaos
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the operation was launched at about 12:00 am on January 1, 2026. The patrol, initially meant to safeguard residents, quickly turned into a security response as miscreants began exploiting the large festive crowds.
The operation was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and involved Divisional Police Officers, tactical commanders, and operatives from various units of the Command.
Acts of Lawlessness and Violence
SP Edafe stated that the hoodlums engaged in widespread criminal acts that severely threatened public safety. Their actions included:
- Blocking major roads and key junctions.
- Organising illegal car races and driving recklessly, which led to some commuters being knocked down.
- Throwing fireworks at innocent members of the public, creating panic.
- Setting tyres ablaze to deliberately obstruct movement.
"The situation deteriorated further when the hoodlums launched violent attacks on police patrol teams, hurling stones and other dangerous objects," Edafe added. The disturbances posed a particular threat to worshippers returning from New Year church services, as access roads were blocked.
Swift Police Response and Recovery
The police stated that their operatives acted "swiftly and professionally" to disperse the violent mobs and restore order, preventing a total breakdown of law and order.
Items recovered from the arrested suspects include:
- 25 motor vehicles
- 8 tricycles
- Fireworks
- Various hard drugs
- Other dangerous offensive weapons
The 43 suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their involvement. The police confirmed that those found culpable will be charged to court.
Command's Stern Warning to Troublemakers
The Delta State Police Command strongly condemned the acts, describing them as criminal, reckless, and unruly. It issued a stern warning to individuals and groups who might seek to exploit festive periods to foment violence or attack security personnel.
"Any attempt to disrupt public peace, obstruct roads, or assault law enforcement officers under any guise will be met with firm and lawful resistance," the Command warned.
