Police Arrest LAMATA Driver Over Death of Teen Pedestrian

The Airport Police Command in Lagos has taken a Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) bus driver into custody following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a young woman. The driver, identified as Adewale Abiodun, is accused of hitting a 19-year-old female pedestrian and then fleeing the scene.

Details of the Tragic Incident at Ikeja Bus Stop

The fatal accident occurred last Friday in the bustling area of Ikeja Bus Stop. According to the police report, the victim had just disembarked from another bus and was walking towards the airport when she was struck by the LAMATA bus. The vehicle involved was an Ashok Leyland bus bearing the registration number MUS 139 YL.

Despite immediate efforts from bystanders at the scene to administer aid, the young woman's injuries proved fatal. She was rushed to the nearby Air Force Base Hospital in Ikeja, where medical personnel pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Police Investigation and Swift Arrest

The Airport Police Command launched a swift investigation into the hit-and-run case. Collaborating with officials from LAMATA, authorities tracked down the driver involved. The suspect, Mr. Adewale Abiodun, was subsequently located, apprehended, and is now detained in police custody.

Spokesperson for the command, Mohammed Adeola, confirmed the arrest and the details of the ongoing investigation.

Commissioner's Condolences and Warning to Motorists

The Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, Dr. Olufunke Ogunbode, expressed profound condolences to the family of the deceased. She assured the public that justice would be served in this matter.

Commissioner Ogunbode issued a stern warning, emphasizing that negligence and reckless driving on Lagos roads will not be tolerated. She stated that offenders would face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. Furthermore, she urged all road users—both motorists and pedestrians—to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.

The police confirmed that suspect Adewale Abiodun will be charged to court once their investigation is concluded.
