The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected serial killer, Akaninyine Eretus, in connection with multiple killings in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.

Arrest Details

The suspect was apprehended by joint security operatives who tracked him to an isolated hut he built inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community, a creek town in the LGA. According to the suspect's confession, he and his gang have been responsible for about 30 killings in the community.

The command's spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday, May 30.

Police Statement

"The Cross River State Police Command wishes to inform the public that investigations into the alleged murder incidents at Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, are ongoing," the statement read. "The suspect, Akaninyine Eretus (M), 40 years, is currently in police custody and assisting investigators."

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted involvement in the killing of two individuals identified as Okokon and Okon (other names yet to be established) on May 24 and May 25, 2026, respectively. He further alleged that one victim was killed while asleep, while the second was attacked with a machete.

Motivation and Recovery of Bodies

The suspect claimed that his actions were motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis in the area approximately 29 years ago. Two bodies believed to be those of the victims have so far been recovered and deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

The command emphasized that the suspect's statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification. Members of the public are advised to refrain from spreading unverified information, rumors, or messages capable of compromising ongoing investigations or causing unnecessary tension within the community.
