Police arrest three motorcycle thieves in Lagos, Ogun

The Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, has apprehended three individuals suspected of motorcycle theft and recovered stolen property across Lagos and Ogun states. During the operation conducted by the Zone 2 Dragon Team, five stolen motorcycles were also retrieved.

Petition Triggers Investigation

The arrests followed a petition submitted on April 12, 2026, to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Olohundare Jimoh, regarding a syndicate allegedly involved in motorcycle theft in Sagamu and Ijebu Ode areas of Ogun State. According to police reports, the syndicate sold stolen motorcycles to buyers in Ogere, Ojodu Berger, Mushin, and other parts of the country.

Operation and Arrests

Acting on the petition, operatives launched an investigation into the group's activities and operational network. Zone 2 Police spokesperson Gbenga Afolayan stated that on May 19, 2026, operatives set up an ambush near the Sagamu Interchange, leading to the arrest of three suspects: 29-year-old Sulaimon Mohammed, 26-year-old Ibrahim Saliu, and 48-year-old Abdullahi Usman.

Investigations revealed that Ibrahim Saliu and two other suspects still at large specialized in stealing motorcycles during late-night operations between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. The suspects would remove motorcycles from parking spots, forcefully unlock the steering systems, and manipulate electrical wires to start the engines.

Recovered Motorcycles

The operation resulted in the recovery of three unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycles, one unregistered Daylong motorcycle, and one unregistered Lifan motorcycle. Police findings further indicated that stolen motorcycles were handed over to Abdullahi Usman, Sulaimon Mohammed, and other fleeing syndicate members at the Sagamu Interchange for disposal.

Syndicate's Extensive Network

Afolayan said further investigation revealed that the syndicate and its accomplices allegedly stole and sold approximately 50 motorcycles across the Sagamu and Ijebu Ode axis. He added that investigators are tracking other fleeing members of the network based on information provided by the arrested suspects.

Commitment to Justice

AIG Jimoh has directed operatives to intensify efforts to arrest the remaining suspects and ensure diligent prosecution of those in custody after investigations conclude. He reaffirmed Zone 2 Headquarters' commitment to protecting lives and property while sustaining the crackdown on theft and related crimes in Lagos and Ogun states.
