Police Arrest UniUyo Student Over False Bandit Alarm

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Police Command have arrested a 23-year-old student of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over a false alarm of a purported bandit invasion in Bayelsa and a school attack.

Commissioner Confirms Arrest

The Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Edebor, who confirmed the arrest, said the 300-level student was responsible for originating and posting the misleading report and false security alarm that caused panic in parts of Bayelsa State.

“As many residents may recall, on the 5th of June 2026, a social media post circulated widely alleging that bandits had infiltrated parts of Bayelsa State and that militants had seized the alleged bandits while demanding ransom for their release. The publication generated widespread concern among residents and triggered panic in several communities,” the CP said.

Impact of False Report

“As a result of the false report, parents rushed to schools to pick up their children, commercial activities were temporarily disrupted, and many citizens became apprehensive about their safety,” he added.

Upon receiving reports of the circulation of the false information, the Commissioner immediately led the deployment of operational and intelligence assets across the affected areas. Following extensive on-the-spot assessment and intelligence gathering, it became evident that the information being circulated was entirely false and without any factual basis.

Investigation and Arrest

Through intelligence-led policing, digital investigation, and technical tracking, detectives successfully identified, tracked, and arrested one Promise Etete, 23 years old, in connection with originating and posting the misleading report. “The suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bayelsa State Command, and has made useful statements assisting ongoing investigations,” CP Edebor stated.

The Commissioner warned the general public over cybercrimes, insisting that “cyberspace is not beyond the reach of law enforcement.” He therefore warned individuals who use social media irresponsibly to desist from such acts and urged residents to verify security-related information before sharing it.

Reassurance to the Public

“Let me reassure the good people of Bayelsa State that there was no bandit invasion, no attack on schools, and no threat to public safety as alleged in the false report,” the CP concluded.
