Nigeria Police Extradite Fugitive to UK for Alleged Murder and Drug Trafficking
The Nigeria Police Force, in a significant international law enforcement operation, has successfully extradited a fugitive, Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, to the United Kingdom. This action was carried out with the assistance of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, highlighting enhanced cross-border cooperation.
Charges and Background of the Case
According to Mr Anthony Placid, the Police Force Public Relations Officer, Adebiyi is set to face serious charges in the UK, including alleged murder and drug trafficking. The extradition stems from a formal request made by UK authorities in September 2024, seeking his location, arrest, and surrender.
The case revolves around the murder of Joshua Boadu on June 18, 2018, with Adebiyi accused of involvement. After the incident, he fled to Nigeria, evading capture for several years. Additionally, he is alleged to have supplied crack cocaine, a Class-A controlled drug, between October 2017 and March 2018 in the United Kingdom.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Adebiyi was apprehended on January 23, 2025, by operatives of the INTERPOL NCB Abuja. Following his arrest, extradition proceedings were initiated at the Federal High Court, Lagos Judicial Division, under Suit No. FHC/L/CS/416/2025.
On February 16, 2026, Justice A.O. Faji granted the application for his extradition, in accordance with the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. This legal approval paved the way for his transfer to UK authorities.
Formal Handover and Police Commitment
Pursuant to the court order and the execution of a surrender warrant by relevant Nigerian authorities, Adebiyi was formally handed over to United Kingdom law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. This step ensures he will face prosecution in the UK for the alleged crimes.
In a statement, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening international police cooperation. He emphasized that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives, underscoring the force's dedication to justice and global security efforts.
