Police Investigate Mob Killing in Taraba, Urge Community Calm

The Taraba State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a violent incident that occurred in Lau local government council, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a forest guard. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Moorkwap Sebastian Dongshal, confirmed the launch of a full-scale probe into the matter, which police have described as a case of culpable homicide followed by retaliatory mob action.

On-the-Spot Assessment and Preliminary Findings

Commissioner Dongshal visited the scene at Mararaban Kunini earlier in the day for an on-the-spot assessment to gather firsthand information. According to preliminary findings shared by the commissioner, the incident began when a forest guard, identified as Jerry Jimmy, arrested a male suspect while performing his duties. During the arrest, a confrontation reportedly erupted, leading the suspect to allegedly stab the guard in the chest with a concealed knife, causing fatal injuries.

The suspect, later identified as Ya’u Jaro Saidu from Jegem Village in Lau local government, was subsequently attacked and killed by a mob in retaliation for the guard's death. This escalation of violence has prompted urgent police intervention to prevent further unrest in the community.

Community Engagement and Calls for Restraint

In the aftermath of the incident, Commissioner Dongshal held a crucial meeting with leaders of the Fulani and Jenjo communities in the area. He urged restraint and strongly warned against taking the law into one's hands, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence and strict adherence to the rule of law. Community leaders, in response, pledged to maintain peace and cooperate with security agencies to prevent any further outbreaks of violence.

The police commissioner has ordered a thorough and comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying and arresting all individuals involved in both the initial stabbing and the subsequent mob action. This move underscores the command's commitment to ensuring justice and accountability in the face of such tragic events.

Appeal for Calm and Vigilance

The Taraba State Police Command has called on residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant during this period. Authorities have encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, reinforcing the collaborative effort needed to maintain security. The command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, highlighting the role of community cooperation in achieving lasting peace.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice and the critical need for legal processes to prevail. As investigations continue, the police urge all parties to avoid actions that could exacerbate tensions, fostering instead a climate of dialogue and respect for the law.
