Ogun Police Probe Murder-Suicide: Husband Kills Wife, Then Self
Police Probe Murder-Suicide in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a harrowing domestic tragedy that culminated in the death of a couple in the Sotubo area. The incident, which involved the fatal stabbing of a housewife by her husband and his subsequent suicide, has sent shockwaves through the community.

A Fatal Attack in Front of Children

According to police reports, the grim sequence of events began on January 8, 2026. The victim, Ayobami Ganiyat Ayanwale, was allegedly attacked by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, at their residence in the Ojodu Abiodun area. In a horrifying act witnessed by their children, Ayoola is said to have stabbed his wife at close range, with the wound piercing her lungs.

Neighbours who rushed to the scene immediately transported the critically injured woman to a nearby medical facility. Tragically, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Before succumbing to her injuries, Ayobami managed to tell neighbours that she had returned home, and without any provocation, her husband began assaulting her. Police sources described Ayoola as a known serial perpetrator of domestic violence.

Police Investigation and Recovery of Evidence

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the details in a statement released in Abeokuta. He stated that upon receiving a domestic violence report on January 8, officers were dispatched to the scene. By the time they arrived, Ayobami had already been pronounced dead.

Three knives were recovered from the couple's residence as potential evidence. With both parents deceased, the couple's three children have been placed in the care of relatives. DSP Babaseyi confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive probe to determine the exact cause of the woman's murder and its connection to her husband's suicide.

Husband Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

The investigation took a further tragic turn on January 9. The suspect, Ayoola Ayanwale, who had fled the scene immediately after the murder, was found unresponsive in an open field in Sotubo. He was rushed to a hospital, where a doctor confirmed he was dead.

While the police statement notes that items recovered at the scene linked him to the earlier murder, unconfirmed reports from the community suggest the husband may have committed suicide by ingesting a poisonous substance. The police are continuing their investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.

This devastating incident highlights the deadly consequences of domestic violence and has left a community in mourning. The Ogun State Police Command assures the public that no stone will be left unturned in their investigation into this double tragedy.
