Pregnant Woman Assaulted in Benue, Activist Awaits Consent

A disturbing incident of domestic violence has been reported in Benue State, where a man allegedly assaulted his wife who is eight months pregnant. The assault is said to have occurred on Thursday, February 12, 2026, according to a family member who disclosed the details.

Human Rights Activist Steps In

Human rights activist Sughnen brought the case to public attention through a Facebook post on Friday. In his post, he expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that the news had wounded his heart. He explained that he received a message from one of his followers informing him about the assault.

Sughnen wrote, "This one wound my heart. I woke up with below message from one of my followers. That a husband to the woman in photo assaulted her yesterday and she is eight (8) months pregnant." He emphasized his commitment to pursuing the case legally but noted that he is awaiting the victim's consent before taking any action.

Challenges in Handling Domestic Violence Cases

The activist highlighted the complexities involved in domestic violence cases, particularly those between spouses. He revealed that he has many similar cases in his inbox but has become cautious due to past experiences. Sughnen advised, "Any case involving husband and wife, use your wisdom, be careful and prayerful handling them."

He further stated, "I've many domestic violence related cases in my inbox but my past experiences handling domestic violence won't allow me spend my money on such cases again." This underscores the financial and emotional toll that such cases can take on advocates.

Awaiting Victim's Consent

For now, Sughnen is waiting for the pregnant woman to give her consent for him to follow up on the case. He assured the public that he will keep them updated as the situation develops, saying, "For now, I wait for her consent. Keep close as we follow it up."

This incident sheds light on the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Nigeria, especially against vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women. It calls for increased awareness and support for victims to come forward and seek justice.
