Nigerian Youth Says Recording Police to Intimidate Them Is Unbearable
Recording Police to Intimidate Is Unbearable: Nigerian Youth

A Nigerian youth has sparked widespread reactions online after sharing his perspective on how some citizens interact with police officers under the leadership of the new Inspector General of Police, Disu. In a video that has gone viral, he argued that while the police have become more efficient at punishing rogue and errant officers, this does not give civilians the right to harass or intimidate officers who are carrying out their duties.

Phone Recording as Intimidation

According to him, many young people now immediately bring out their phones to record police officers upon sight, sometimes without any provocation. He described this behavior as an attempt to intimidate officers on the road. The youth maintained that a police officer performing lawful duties should not be threatened by cameras. He stressed that recording an officer does not automatically mean they will stop doing their job or let someone go.

Police Are Public Servants, Not Slaves

The youth added that police officers are not slaves but public servants. He urged citizens to remain guided in how they engage with law enforcement, despite the recent disciplinary actions taken against rogue officers. He emphasized that mutual respect is essential for effective policing and public safety.
