NSCDC Apprehends 6 Suspected Cable Vandals in Benue Operation
Six Cable Vandal Suspects Arrested in Benue

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benue State has recorded a significant breakthrough in its fight against infrastructure vandalism. Six individuals suspected of vandalizing critical power cables have been taken into custody following a coordinated operation.

Coordinated Surveillance Leads to Arrests

The arrests were the result of a strategic surveillance operation conducted by the command. According to the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, SC EA Michael, the operation was carried out on Saturday, December 28, 2024, in collaboration with vigilant youths from the Apir community. The location of the crime was Apir settlement, opposite the NNPC Depot in Makurdi.

The suspects were apprehended for their alleged involvement in criminal conspiracy and the vandalism of PHCN/TCN cables. These cables are vital components of the national power grid, and their destruction causes widespread blackouts and economic losses.

Suspects Identified and Commandant's Stern Warning

The NSCDC has named the six individuals in custody. They are: Shiaondo David Iorshenge, identified as the prime suspect, Terungwa Asombo, Nomyar Bemdoo, Tyoakura Apino Christopher, Terhemba Iortuhwa Victor, and Musa Abdullahi.

This crackdown comes after a clear warning issued by the State Commandant, CC LA Bitrus. In her Yuletide security deployment statement, she had sternly cautioned criminal elements against exploiting the festive season to attack public infrastructure. She reiterated that the protection of critical national assets is a top priority for the Corps.

Community Synergy Praised as Investigation Continues

Commandant Bitrus commended the officers involved for their dedication. She particularly emphasized the deepening collaboration between the NSCDC and local communities across Benue State. She acknowledged the pivotal role host communities play in safeguarding government infrastructure that directly benefits them.

"Let me further sound a word of caution to these enemies of national security, Benue State will not be a safe haven for your nefarious activities. For us, the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure is non-negotiable," the Commandant declared.

The Corps has confirmed that investigations are ongoing and the suspects will be promptly charged to court for prosecution. This arrest sends a strong message about the zero-tolerance stance against economic sabotage in the state.
