Thai Police Uncover N67 Million Hidden in Nigerian Suspect's Bathroom Ceiling

In a dramatic late-night operation, police in Thailand have arrested a Nigerian national, Nwaiwu Ifeanyi, after discovering approximately 1.5 million baht, equivalent to over N67 million, concealed in the ceiling of his bathroom. The raid, conducted over the weekend, also led to the apprehension of three additional individuals believed to be part of the same drug distribution network.

Details of the Raid and Seizures

Authorities reported recovering a significant haul during the operation, including cocaine, cash, a vehicle, and valuable jewellery. According to information from Khaosod English, investigators had been monitoring Ifeanyi's activities prior to his arrest near Silom Soi 1. At the time of his capture, officers allegedly found about 27 grams of cocaine in his possession.

The other suspects taken into custody include a Swiss national, Thomas Giubibini, along with two Thai nationals identified as Thanayot Asawamethi and Nattawat Wangkitjinda. All individuals are now facing charges related to drug possession.

In total, police seized approximately 30 grams of cocaine, cash amounting to 1.5 million baht, additional foreign currency valued at about 15,000 baht, and jewellery estimated to be worth 400,000 baht.

Background and Investigation

Investigators revealed that Ifeanyi had resided in Thailand for more than 17 years under a family visa obtained through a Thai spouse. However, officials now suspect that the marriage may have been arranged to facilitate his stay and illicit operations.

Police further alleged that the suspect coordinated drug transactions using encrypted messaging platforms, which officers managed to infiltrate before making the arrests. Ifeanyi reportedly resisted arrest but was subdued, after which he is said to have admitted involvement in the illegal activities.

Context of the Arrest

This arrest occurs amid ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to clamp down on drug trafficking networks. It also follows a recent case involving another Nigerian, Ukoma Nuzbech, who was earlier arrested for allegedly evading trial in a separate drug-related matter.

The operation highlights the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in combating international drug rings and the sophisticated methods employed by suspects to conceal assets and communicate securely.
