Three Killed, Journalists Injured in Enugu Multiple Auto Crashes

Three individuals have reportedly lost their lives in a devastating motor accident that occurred at the Ugwu Onyeama hills section of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway over the weekend. The crash involved multiple vehicles, including a black Toyota Sienna bus transporting journalists who were on an official assignment to Igbo-Etiti Local Council in Enugu State.

Injured Journalists and Rescue Efforts

The affected journalists sustained varying degrees of injury and included Chimaroke Ugwu, a reporter from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), along with his cameraman Jerry. Additionally, Kelechi Ehirim, a reporter from African Independent Television (AIT), and his cameraman Ifeanyi Ogbodo were injured in the incident. As of the time of reporting, the identities of the deceased persons had not been confirmed.

Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police were present at the scene, conducting rescue operations and managing the aftermath of the crash. The Ugwu Onyeama stretch of the highway is widely recognized as a high-risk area due to its steep terrain and history of frequent accidents.

Ongoing Road Reconstruction and Safety Concerns

Road users have been limited to one lane of the highway because of ongoing reconstruction work on the other side. Last week, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, inspected the progress of the lane and directed the contractor to reopen the road before Easter to help reduce the carnage and traffic congestion experienced on the open lane.

Efforts to contact the Sector Commander of FRSC in Enugu, Franklin Onyekwelu, regarding the incident proved unsuccessful as he did not answer calls to his mobile phone. In response to the tragedy, Obinna Ogbuka, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Enugu Council, expressed sympathy for the injured NUJ members and thanked God for sparing their lives.

Calls for Action and Investigation

Ogbuka voiced dissatisfaction over the repeated loss of lives at Ugwu Onyeama and urged authorities to expedite the completion of the road reconstruction to prevent further incidents. He stated, "Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into the cause of the crash is still ongoing." The community and road safety advocates continue to call for improved measures to address the hazardous conditions on this critical expressway.
