Ukrainian billionaire critical, wife loses feet in Monaco blast

A Ukrainian billionaire and his family were critically injured when a shrapnel-filled bomb exploded at an apartment building in Monaco on Monday night, June 29. The attack, which police believe was deliberate, targeted Vadim Ermolaev, also known as Vadym Yermolaiev, his wife Anna, and their 13-year-old son.

Details of the Explosion

The bomb, concealed in a backpack filled with nuts and bolts, detonated around 10 p.m. at the entrance of the Cuomo Foundation, a philanthropic organization. CCTV footage reportedly shows a suspect dropping off bags shortly before the blast. The explosion destroyed the building's entrance and left three victims in critical condition.

Victims' Condition

Vadim Ermolaev is in critical condition. His wife Anna, described as a woman in her 50s or 60s, suffered severe injuries, with witnesses reporting that she had both feet missing and was slumped over, covered in blood. Their 13-year-old son, one of the couple’s four children, was also injured. All three were in the building’s entrance at the time of the blast.

Suspect and Manhunt

The suspect, a male wearing a black hat, tracksuit, white jeans, and trainers, was seen fleeing towards the border in the nearby French town of Beausoleil. Police have launched a manhunt in Monaco and are gathering evidence. The explosive device likely contained bolts and shot, according to Minister of State Christophe Mirmand.

Official Reactions

While the incident has not been declared a terrorist attack, Mayor of Nice Eric Ciotti called it an attack. He wrote on X: 'The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that has hit Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilised.' Minister of State Christophe Mirmand later said, 'This is likely an attack. This is the first time in history, to my knowledge, that such an act has occurred in the Principality.'
