UNN Security Arrests Teachers Over Alleged Political Meeting
Security personnel of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have arrested three teachers from the institution's Secondary School, Nsukka. The teachers, Mr. Lawrence Oko, also known as 'Uncle Law' and a Civic Education instructor, along with Hon. Chinedu Ezenwa, were taken into custody on allegations of holding a political meeting with members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 15, 2026, shortly after PDP campaign officials concluded an engagement ahead of the June 20 Enugu North Senatorial District by-election. According to reports, the PDP candidate, Dr. Nestor Ezeme, was accompanied by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, the PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Enugu State.
The university management reportedly opposed allowing the PDP meeting within the university community. Sources claim that UNN security personnel arrived at the venue after the campaign team had departed and attempted to identify the organizers. Mr. Oko was subsequently taken into custody and asked to write a statement, though the contents could not be independently verified.
Some staff members questioned the arrest, noting that political parties have previously visited various parts of the university community without incident. There were also allegations that a security officer described Chief Uche Nnaji as 'an enemy of the university,' a claim that could not be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Hon. Chinedu Ezenwe was reportedly summoned to appear before the university's security department on June 16 to provide information about the invitation extended to Dr. Ezeme and his campaign team. Sources maintained that the meeting was held outside the secondary school premises and that approval had been obtained from relevant school authorities.
It was further alleged that some university security guards were tasked with monitoring the movements of both the PDP gubernatorial candidate and the senatorial aspirant, with plans to detain them in an underground cell without police involvement. Police sources indicated that the plan was uncovered after detectives from the Nsukka Area Command intervened, prompting the university security personnel to flee and hide within the campus. Negotiations between the university authority and the police are ongoing.
Members of the university community have called for an investigation into the security personnel's actions and demanded the immediate release of the teacher if no offense is established. As of the time of reporting, neither the UNN management nor the security department has issued an official statement on the incident.
