Woman Arrested in Connection with Teacher Accused of 25 Child Sex Crimes
A woman has been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into a fifth-grade teacher accused of 25 child sex crimes, including first-degree rape. The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has shocked the community and raised serious concerns about child safety.
Additional Arrest in Ongoing Probe
Cortney Burleigh, 37, was arrested on Thursday following the identification of an additional victim in the case involving teacher Marisa Noel. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the arrest, confirming that Burleigh faces three felony charges related to the sexual abuse of a child under 13.
According to authorities, Burleigh did not work at Teche Elementary School in Breaux Bridge where Noel was previously employed. Her charges include indecent behavior with juveniles as an accessory after the fact, cruelty to juveniles, and obstruction of justice. The cruelty to juveniles charge alone carries a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years in Louisiana.
Teacher's Escalating Charges
Marisa Noel was initially arrested last Monday following a two-month investigation into her behavior with a fifth-grade student. Her original charges included four counts of indecent behavior with juveniles and four counts of using a computer to solicit a minor.
However, the case took a more serious turn last Wednesday when prosecutors filed additional charges after identifying another victim. The new charges against Noel include:
- 10 counts of indecent behavior with juveniles
- 2 counts of possessing child sexual abuse material
- First-degree rape allegation
- Unlawful communications and harassment
- Using a computer to solicit a minor
Noel remains in custody at the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center as the investigation continues to unfold.
Ongoing Investigation and Official Statement
Attorney General Murrill emphasized that the investigation "is still very ongoing" and pledged continued support for law enforcement partners across the state. "We will continue to support our partners across the state and bring to justice anyone who exploits or sexually abuses the children of Louisiana," Murrill stated.
The case highlights the serious nature of child exploitation crimes and the coordinated efforts between multiple agencies to address such offenses. Authorities have not disclosed the specific relationship between Burleigh and Noel, nor have they revealed details about how the additional victim was identified.
Community members and parents at Teche Elementary School have expressed concern about the allegations, with many calling for increased vigilance and protective measures for students. The school district has not released an official statement regarding the arrests, but sources indicate that counseling services have been made available to affected families.
Legal experts note that cases involving multiple defendants and numerous charges typically indicate a complex investigation that may involve extensive evidence collection and witness interviews. The obstruction of justice charge against Burleigh suggests authorities believe she may have attempted to interfere with the investigation into Noel's alleged crimes.
As both women await further legal proceedings, the Louisiana Attorney General's office continues to work with local law enforcement to ensure all aspects of the case are thoroughly investigated. The arrests serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from sexual abuse.
