Nigerian Woman Exposes Suspected Scammer in Recorded Phone Call

A Nigerian woman has gained widespread attention on social media after cleverly outsmarting a suspected scammer during a tense phone conversation. The incident, which involved a promise of N15,000 to celebrate a car purchase, was shared online, sparking reactions and warnings about fraud tactics.

How the Scam Unfolded

The content creator, identified as @wemmy355 on TikTok, posted a two-part video detailing her encounter. According to her narration, a man contacted her, claiming he wanted to send her N15,000 as part of a celebration for buying a new car. He instructed her to go to a nearby Point of Sale (POS) agent to confirm withdrawal charges, which were estimated at around N3,000.

However, the situation took a suspicious turn when the woman changed her voice tone to impersonate a POS agent named Iya Ola. The caller then attempted to manipulate the transaction by asking Iya Ola to send the N15,000 to his own account instead, effectively trying to reverse the flow of money and scam the lady into paying him.

Playing Along to Expose the Fraud

The lady played along with the scammer's demands, allowing him to dictate his account number and rush the process in an apparent effort to create confusion. At the last minute, she revealed that she had been aware of the scam all along, exposing his tactics. She captioned the uploaded video, stating, "I record a scammer call today. So I played along."

The recorded conversation, which she shared online, highlighted the scammer's attempt to use social engineering to deceive victims through phone-based POS transactions.

Online Reactions and Similar Experiences

The videos sparked a flurry of reactions from TikTok users, with many sharing their own encounters with similar scams. Comments included:

  • Oyin: "I swear this person call me also last year the person is Yoruba he said exactly what this man said."
  • Jola: "Person go just sit down dash another person wey him no know 15k??"
  • Debbie: "He doesn't even have patience."
  • Jerry Anis: "But I don't understand how you know it was a scam though?"

One user, suwaibatul Aslamiyya, shared a personal story of falling victim to a similar scam, losing N20,000 after a caller posed as her husband's customer. This underscores the prevalence of such fraud schemes in Nigeria.

Broader Context of Scam Warnings

In related news, a businesswoman recently disclosed losing N300,000 to scammers selling fake products, emphasizing the need for vigilance. These incidents serve as reminders for the public to be cautious of unsolicited offers and to verify transactions thoroughly, especially through phone calls involving financial requests.

The viral story has not only entertained but also educated many on the tactics used by fraudsters, promoting awareness and preventive measures in the community.
