Court Orders Remand of Woman for Brutal Attack on AEDC Staff in Nasarawa
A court in Nasarawa State has ordered the remand of a woman, identified as Mrs. Laraba Waziri, for allegedly mobilizing her son and his friends to brutally assault a staff member of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC). The incident, which occurred on February 10, 2026, has raised serious concerns about the safety of electricity utility personnel across Nigeria.
Details of the Assault and Debt Dispute
According to a statement released by AEDC on Thursday, February 12, 2026, the victim, Mr. Abdul Ishaka, a Customer Representative Officer stationed at the Karshi Service Center in Masaka, was carrying out lawful enforcement duties when the attack took place. At approximately 13:00 hrs., Ishaka questioned Mrs. Waziri about illegally reconnecting her service wire to restore power after being disconnected for non-payment. Records show that her account carries an outstanding debt of N272,499.47.
In response, Mrs. Waziri allegedly mobilized her son and his friends to assault Mr. Ishaka, beating him severely until he lost consciousness. The attack was so violent that he had to be rushed to Emmanuel Baptist Clinic for emergency first aid before being transferred to the Federal Medical Center in Keffi, where he remains hospitalized and receiving treatment.
Police Intervention and Legal Proceedings
The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) personally intervened in the case, directing the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police to expedite the investigation. As a result, the primary suspect, Mrs. Waziri, was detained and arraigned before the Senior Magistrate Court in Auta Balefi. The court has remanded her in police custody until other suspects, who are currently at large, are apprehended.
This incident underscores ongoing challenges faced by utility workers in Nigeria, particularly in enforcing payment compliance and ensuring their personal safety during field operations. AEDC has emphasized the need for public cooperation and respect for lawful duties to prevent such violent occurrences in the future.
