NAPTIP Rescues Two Minors in Enugu Child Trafficking Case

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has uncovered a suspected child trafficking operation allegedly linked to orphanage-related activities in Enugu State, rescuing two minors believed to have been sold under the pretence of care arrangements.

Operation Details

In a statement shared on its official social media page on Wednesday, the agency disclosed that it has launched a full investigation into the case involving a 51-year-old suspect identified as Thaddeus, who is alleged to have sold the children to his uncle, Elies.

It stated that “the suspect, Thaddeus (51), is alleged to have been involved in the sale of two children to his uncle, Elies,” warning that the development “raises serious concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable minors under the guise of care arrangements.”

It stated: “Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Agency carried out a rescue operation which led to the recovery of the two victims from Enugu State.”

Victim Support and Investigation

The agency further confirmed that the rescued children are currently receiving care and protection in line with its victim support protocols. It added that “The children, whose identities are being protected, are currently in safe custody receiving necessary care and support in line with the Agency’s victim protection protocols.”

NAPTIP also said investigations are ongoing to uncover the full network behind the alleged trafficking activity and ensure that all suspects involved are brought to justice. Providing further updates, the agency stated: “The case remains under active investigation as NAPTIP intensifies efforts to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network and ensure that all persons found culpable are brought to justice.”

The agency urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities linked to human trafficking. This latest operation adds to ongoing nationwide enforcement efforts against trafficking syndicates.

Previous Interceptions

In April, NAPTIP, in collaboration with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the Nigeria Immigration Service, intercepted 47 Nigerians at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while attempting to travel to Cairo, Egypt. The individuals were taken into protective custody for profiling and support as investigations continue into those behind the alleged trafficking network.
