The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has issued a strong appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them to reject violence and embrace peace in their various agitations. The monarch made this crucial plea on Sunday, 12 January 2026, during a meeting with leaders of the Benin City Christian Community at his palace.
A Royal Plea for Peace and Restraint
The royal father's address marked the climax of the Christian community's 2026 Universal Week of Prayers, which carried the theme 'The Unchangeable God'. Speaking directly in the Edo language, Oba Ewuare II specifically called on the youth of Edo State to exercise wisdom and restraint.
He emphasized the importance of preserving the nation's heritage for future generations and avoiding actions that could plunge Nigeria into chaos. "To all our youths across Edo State, we use this opportunity to plead with you, do not use violence to destroy Nigeria and cause confusion in this country," the revered traditional ruler stated.
Oba Ewuare II further encouraged support for the government, urging citizens to "allow this government in Edo State to work" and to continually pray for divine guidance for the nation's leaders. Drawing from his nearly decade-long experience on the throne of his ancestors, he also called for unity among Christians of all denominations.
Prayers for Leadership and a Call to Duty
During the gathering, the Oba read from Psalms 23 and offered prayers, asking Almighty God and his royal ancestors to grant Nigerian leaders strength and divine wisdom in their daily responsibilities. Echoing this spiritual focus, one of the Christian community leaders, Apostle Godspower Ogbonmwan, reminded all leaders, irrespective of religious affiliation, of their sacred obligations to the people they serve.
Insecurity Prompts School Postponement in Edo Central
In a related development highlighting the security concerns in the region, the Edo State Government has announced the postponement of resumption for all public and private schools in the Edo Central Senatorial District. This district is the home area of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
This decision is widely believed to be connected to the rising insecurity in the area. The move follows recent violent protests in Ekpoma, which were triggered by incessant kidnappings. During those protests, angry demonstrators vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma and looted several shops—actions that were strongly condemned by the state government.
In an official statement, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, explained that the postponement will remain in effect until further notice. The delay is to enable the government to "address some exigencies and improve the welfare of pupils."
The government has assured parents, guardians, and education stakeholders that a new resumption date will be communicated in due course, and has requested their compliance with the directive.
