Boko Haram Militants Storm Borno Military Base and IDP Camp in Coordinated Attack

Suspected Boko Haram fighters have executed a devastating assault on a military installation and an Internally Displaced Persons camp located in Ngoshe town, within Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack, which occurred shortly after Muslims broke their fast on Wednesday, resulted in significant casualties and the abduction of more than 100 women and children.

Details of the Assault and Its Aftermath

According to multiple security sources and local residents, the militants targeted the 82 Division TF Battalion military base before moving on to the IDP camp in the community. During the raid, they overpowered soldiers, pursued fleeing residents, and conducted extensive ransacking of the town and surrounding areas. The attackers also set fire to military vehicles and armored tanks, while seizing a substantial cache of ammunition.

The violence claimed the life of the Chief Imam of Ngoshe, who was reportedly killed during the incident. Many residents have since fled to the nearby town of Pulka, abandoning their homes and businesses in the wake of the attack. The exact number of soldiers and civilians killed remains unknown at this time.

Political and Security Responses

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South under the APC, has confirmed the killings and called for an intensified military operation in the Sambisa Forests and Mandara Mountains. He suggested that the insurgents may have targeted Ngoshe due to opposition to the government's resettlement plans, which could explain their focus on civilian infrastructure.

Local sources have expressed concerns about possible insider information facilitating the attack, with one stating, "It's not possible to carry out such an attack without information from within us." This incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing northeastern Nigeria, despite ongoing military efforts to combat insurgency in the region.
