Court Orders Remand of Suspected Kidnappers in Ondo

A Magistrate's Court in Akure, Ondo State has taken decisive action against alleged criminal activities by ordering the remand of two suspected interstate kidnappers. The court presided over by Chief Magistrate F.A. Akinboboye directed that Ibrahim Abdulahi, 30, and Abubakar Umaru, 25 be held at the Olokuta Correctional Facility pending further legal proceedings.

Details of the Alleged Crimes

According to police prosecutor Owolabi Edu, the suspects faced a four-count charge involving conspiracy, stealing, and attempted kidnapping. The alleged offenses occurred on October 16, 2025, at approximately 5:45 p.m. in the Area Mother district of Ore, Ondo State.

Edu informed the court that the defendants, along with other accomplices who remain at large, attempted to kidnap a cattle herder identified as Bello Aliu. During the attempted abduction, the suspects allegedly stole one cow valued at N600,000 belonging to the victim.

The prosecution further revealed that Abubakar Umaru played a crucial role in the operation by providing essential information to Ibrahim Abdulahi and another suspect named Sandar, who remains at large, to facilitate the kidnapping attempt.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Ondo State Police Command before being formally arraigned in court. Police prosecutor Edu emphasized that the offenses contravened Sections 4 and 11 of the Ondo State Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Abduction Law of 2010, as well as Section 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Following standard legal procedure, the prosecutor requested the court to remand the suspects at the correctional facility while awaiting legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Chief Magistrate Akinboboye granted this request and additionally directed that the case file be forwarded to the DPP's office for proper evaluation and advice.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 12, 2025, when the case will be mentioned again as the legal process continues to unfold.
