Doctor Freed After N50m Ransom Paid in Edo

A medical doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, has been released from captivity after his family paid a hefty ransom of N50 million to his abductors in Edo State. The victim was kidnapped alongside his younger brother, who was later killed by the kidnappers.

The Abduction and Tragic Loss

The incident occurred on January 2, 2026, at the doctor's residence along City Pride Road in the Igbira Camp area of Auchi, located in Esan West Local Government. Dr. Tahir and his brother were seized while opening the gate to their compound. In a devastating turn of events, the younger brother was murdered by the captors. His remains were discovered on January 5 near the Orley River, off the same City Pride Road.

The Ransom Payment and Release

Speaking on the telephone, the victim's father detailed the painful ordeal. He revealed that the N50 million ransom was paid in two installments: first N20 million, followed by another N30 million. The funds were gathered through a collective effort involving the family, donations from non-governmental organisations, friends, and other well-wishers.

"My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel good that he has been released but I also lost another son," the grieving father stated. Dr. Tahir was finally set free on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m.

Aftermath and Official Confirmation

The doctor sustained a minor injury during the ordeal. "My son was brushed by a bullet but he is receiving treatment at a hospital," his father added. When contacted, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the victim's release. The confirmation brings a close to a traumatic chapter for the family, albeit one marked by profound loss and financial strain.

The case highlights the persistent security challenges of kidnapping for ransom in parts of Nigeria, where families are often forced into difficult negotiations to secure the freedom of their loved ones.
