Benue Groom-to-Be Freed After N1.5m Ransom Paid to Kidnappers
Kidnapped Benue groom freed after N1.5m ransom

A Benue State man, who was abducted just days before his planned traditional marriage, has finally been reunited with his family following the payment of a substantial ransom.

Abduction on a Pre-Wedding Errand

Tartenger Terdue James was seized by kidnappers on the evening of Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The young man was travelling to neighbouring Cross River State at the time. His mission was to purchase palm oil, a key item needed for his traditional wedding ceremony which was scheduled for Saturday, December 13.

His disappearance threw his family and community into panic, with the joyous wedding preparations turning into a desperate search for his whereabouts.

Negotiation and Eventual Release

According to family members who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the kidnappers made an initial demand of N3 million for his safe return. After tense negotiations, the family managed to raise and send a sum of approximately N1.5 million to the captors.

"We tried our best and sent part of the money they asked for. It was not complete, but they released him," a relative stated, expressing a mix of relief and financial strain.

The payment secured James's freedom. He was released in the early hours of Wednesday, December 17. The kidnappers dropped him off at Kone, Tse-Ken, a location within the Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, from where he found his way back home.

Aftermath of a Traumatic Ordeal

While the family is overjoyed at his safe return, the incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a celebratory period. The financial burden of the ransom payment is significant, and the psychological trauma of the kidnapping on the groom-to-be is a serious concern.

This case highlights the persistent security challenges in parts of Benue State and the wider Nigerian region, where citizens undertaking ordinary journeys remain at risk. It also underscores the painful dilemma families face when forced to negotiate with criminals for the lives of their loved ones.

The status of his wedding plans following this harrowing experience remains unclear, as the family focuses on his recovery and well-being.
