Fear and tension have gripped residents of the Bodija axis in Ibadan, Oyo State, following the circulation of a security alert warning of potential kidnapping and armed robbery threats in the area. The alert, which sparked widespread concern, was attributed to the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) of the Bodija Housing Estate Division.
Community Leaders Deny Incidents But Urge Vigilance
In response to the growing anxiety, the leadership of the Bodija Estate Residents Association has moved to address the rumors. Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, President of the Association, explicitly denied any recent cases of kidnapping or robbery within the Bodija Housing Estate itself. However, he confirmed that the community is not taking any chances.
"Where these cases are happening calls for concern," Pastor Bamgbose stated. He revealed that while one incident occurred in Akobo, which is farther away, another happened in Kongi, an area he described as "next door" to Bodija. This proximity has prompted the estate to implement precautionary strategies, though the specific measures are being kept confidential for security reasons.
Police Push Back, Cite Lack of Formal Reports
The Oyo State Police Command has presented a different perspective on the situation. When contacted by journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the command had not received any official reports of kidnapping or armed robbery cases related to the alert as of the time of inquiry.
"I don't have such a report as we speak," DSP Ayanlade said. Despite this official position from the police, the circulated PCRC alert contained detailed safety guidelines, indicating an underlying concern. The advisory urged residents to:
- Avoid sharing travel plans on social media.
- Refrain from showcasing wealth or financial status in public.
- Establish a secret emergency code word with family members.
- Not offer rides to strangers, even if they appear distressed, and instead alert security agencies.
Residents Strategize Amidst Broader Security Concerns
The alert has had a tangible impact, with residents of Bodija and neighbouring communities actively discussing and implementing personal and collective safety measures. The situation is unfolding against a backdrop of recent violent incidents in Oyo State, which has heightened general security apprehensions.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a deadly attack on January 6, where gunmen stormed the National Park Service office in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area, killing five officers. Governor Seyi Makinde condemned that attack as a "devastating loss," ordering reinforced security in the area.
While the police maintain that no formal reports have been filed regarding the Bodija kidnapping alert, the proactive steps taken by community leaders and the palpable fear among residents highlight the critical need for clear communication and collaborative security efforts between the public and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
