Kwara Governor Mourns Slain Forest Guard, Pledges N10 Million Support to Family
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of a forest guard, Mr Omotosho Samuel, who was fatally shot during a confrontation with suspected kidnappers in the Koro community, located within the Ekiti Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting escalating security challenges in parts of the state.
Details of the Fatal Encounter in Koro Community
According to reports, the clash took place when a combined team of forest guards, local hunters, and vigilantes acted on intelligence regarding the presence of armed bandits in the bush around Koro, a border community near Kogi State. During the operation, the volunteers were reportedly ambushed, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Mr Samuel sustained fatal injuries and lost his life at the scene.
Governor AbdulRazaq's Tribute and Financial Assistance
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, Governor AbdulRazaq described the incident as devastating and paid heartfelt tribute to the fallen guard. He announced a substantial support fund of N10 million for the family of the deceased, emphasizing that this donation serves as a token of the state government's gratitude for Samuel's ultimate sacrifice in the ongoing battle against banditry and kidnapping.
"He is our hero, and we ask God to give succour to his family," the governor stated, while extending his condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of the forest guard. Additionally, Governor AbdulRazaq commended the bravery of all security agents and volunteers involved in the operation, assuring them of continued government backing in efforts to eradicate criminal elements from Kwara State.
Police Clarification on the Incident as a Bush Encounter
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, provided clarification on the event, describing it not as a direct attack on Koro township but rather as a "bush encounter" between security volunteers and suspected bandits. He explained that the forest guards and vigilantes were alerted to the presence of suspected gunmen in the bush with some cows, leading to the confrontation.
Commissioner Ojo further noted that Samuel's AK-47 rifle and 15 rounds of ammunition were recovered intact, suggesting the possibility of friendly fire during the chaotic exchange. He also mentioned that the police were not notified prior to the team engaging the suspects, underscoring coordination issues in security operations.
Rising Security Concerns and Recent Threats in Kwara State
The killing of Mr Samuel has intensified concerns about security in Kwara State, following other recent incidents such as a major assault on the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area. In a related development, residents of Lalagi village in Kaiama LGA have been thrown into panic after suspected terrorists demanded a N20 million levy and issued threats against the community.
Farmers were reportedly intercepted on their farmlands and instructed to convey this demand to community leaders, adding to the atmosphere of fear. Additionally, a separate security memo had alerted authorities to a potential attack on the Gbabe community in Baruten local government area, further highlighting the volatile security landscape.
