The abducted retired Major General Abubakar Rabe has died while in the custody of bandits in Katsina State, exactly two weeks after his abduction. The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Muazu, confirmed the death in a statement issued on Saturday, June 13. According to the commissioner, the retired senior military officer succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
Government Expresses Deep Sorrow
The Katsina State government expressed profound sadness over the development, noting that extensive efforts were made by the state government and security agencies to secure the former Army General's release, but to no avail. The statement read: 'It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General's death while in bandits' captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.'
According to the government, the late General's abduction and subsequent death represent a significant loss not only to his immediate family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria as a whole. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the nation, describing the incident as a dark moment that underscores the need for stronger collaboration in tackling insecurity.
Details of the Abduction
The retired major general was traveling to Katsina on Saturday, May 30, alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, and their driver, Abdullahi Sa'idu, when their vehicle was ambushed along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu Local Government Area. The bandits seized the General, while his wife and driver were later released. Despite efforts by security agencies, the General remained in captivity until his death.
