Kogi Police Launch Massive Operation After Gunmen Abduct Passengers on Ayere-Kabba Road
The Kogi State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive search-and-rescue mission in response to a kidnapping incident that occurred on the Ayere–Kabba Road within the Kabba Local Government Area. According to an official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the attack took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. on April 13, 2026, when armed assailants intercepted a commercial Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Lagos to Abuja.
Swift Police Response Leads to Arrests and Partial Rescue
Following a rapid and coordinated response from security forces, one passenger was successfully rescued from the scene. The transport vehicle involved in the incident has been recovered and is currently at a police facility for detailed forensic examination. State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the attack, noting that they are in custody and assisting the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) with ongoing inquiries.
Efforts to secure the release of the remaining abducted passengers have been intensified, with sustained bush-combing and search-and-rescue operations being conducted by joint operatives from the Police, Military, and other sister security agencies. The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the SCID, supported by tactical teams, remains actively engaged in ensuring the safe rescue of victims and the swift apprehension of all perpetrators involved.
Ongoing Investigations and Community Involvement
The police statement emphasized that these operations are being vigorously pursued, with further developments to be communicated as they unfold. The Command has urged families and relatives of the victims to report to the SCID Headquarters in Lokoja, specifically the anti-kidnapping unit, to assist with identification and the ongoing investigation.
