Edo Security Corps Nabs 21-Year-Old for Alleged Kidnap of 4-Year-Old Boy in Benin
Suspect arrested for kidnapping 4-year-old in Benin City

The Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) has successfully apprehended a suspect and rescued a young child in a swift response to a kidnapping incident in Benin City.

Vigilant Citizens Foil Kidnapping Attempt

On January 4, 2026, a mother's routine outing with her four-year-old son at Ikpoba Hill in Benin City took a terrifying turn when the boy suddenly vanished from her sight. The quick thinking of a commercial bus driver and a female passenger, however, would prove crucial in preventing a tragedy.

Conflicting Stories Raise Alarm

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old ThankGod Destiny, had allegedly taken the child and boarded a bus heading towards King's Square. The driver became suspicious due to the clear lack of resemblance between the man and the distressed boy. When questioned, Destiny first claimed the child was ill and he was taking him to a hospital. Later, a female passenger also inquired, and he changed his story, saying he was going to buy shoes for the boy.

"The conflicting explanations prompted the driver and the woman to raise the alarm," explained Deputy Corps Commander, Operations, Richard Balogun. This immediate action attracted ESSC personnel who were on patrol in the area.

Swift Arrest and Happy Reunion

The security operatives moved quickly, arresting ThankGod Destiny on the spot. The four-year-old victim was rescued unharmed in the operation. According to Balogun, who addressed journalists in Benin on Thursday, January 8, the child has since been safely reunited with his grateful family.

The suspect has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further detailed investigation and subsequent prosecution. The ESSC used this opportunity to reassure Edo State residents of its unwavering commitment to public safety. Deputy Commander Balogun assured that the Corps would continue to intensify efforts to rid the state of all forms of criminal activities, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior.
