The Edo State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has raised a serious alarm over the deteriorating security situation in the state following the separate kidnappings of two of its members. The association warns that the safety of healthcare workers is now under direct threat, which in turn jeopardizes the entire healthcare system for residents.
NMA Chairman Calls for Urgent Action
In a strongly-worded statement issued on 8 January 2026, the Chairman of the Edo NMA, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, appealed directly to Governor Monday Okpebholo and the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika. Oseghale urged them to address the worsening insecurity with immediate and effective measures. He emphasized that the safety and security of healthcare workers are of paramount importance, given their critical role in maintaining public health.
Details of the Abducted Medical Practitioners
The two kidnapped doctors are identified as Dr. Abu Babatunde and Dr. Stephen Osamaye. Both are respected members of the NMA working at major teaching hospitals in the state.
Dr. Abu Babatunde, a staff member of the Edo State University Teaching Hospital in Auchi, was abducted in the Auchi area.
Dr. Stephen Osamaye, who works at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, was kidnapped along Illeh Road in Ekpoma.
Impact on Healthcare Delivery and a Plea for Safety
The NMA leadership stated it is deeply troubled not only by these specific incidents but by the rising trend of insecurity across Edo State. The association highlighted that this dangerous environment is already negatively affecting the delivery of healthcare services to the public.
Beyond securing the safe return of the two doctors, the NMA is calling on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of their abduction. The underlying message is clear: protecting medical personnel is not just about their individual safety, but about safeguarding the health and security of every citizen in Edo State.
