Two More JAMB Candidates Escape Kidnappers’ Den in Benue State
In a significant development, two more of the 15 candidates abducted in Ikobi, Benue State, on Wednesday have managed to escape from captivity. This reduces the number of those still missing to 13, according to a statement issued by the Benue Links Transport Company on Friday in Makurdi.
The company's Public Relations Officer, Johnson Ehi, disclosed that during the initial attack, the driver and a few passengers escaped, while 15 others were taken by the kidnappers. The two victims who later regained their freedom did so under circumstances that are still being investigated by authorities.
Unauthorized Trip Violates Company Guidelines
Management of Benue Links Transport Company has clarified that the trip was unauthorized and conducted in clear violation of the company's operational guidelines. The statement emphasized a standing directive prohibiting company vehicles from embarking on journeys beyond 6:00 p.m. due to prevailing security challenges in the region.
It was explained that the driver, acting without the knowledge or approval of management, removed the vehicle from the company's premises, picked up passengers, and embarked on the journey without due documentation or clearance. Because the trip was not officially recorded, the company currently lacks comprehensive details of the passengers, although most are believed to be candidates of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Sympathy and Security Efforts
Comrade Alexander Aondohemba Fanafa, the General Manager of Benue Links, expressed deep sympathy to the affected families and assured that the company is collaborating with security agencies to secure the safe release of the remaining abductees. This incident has highlighted ongoing security concerns in Benue State, particularly for students traveling to write examinations.
Meanwhile, Governor Hyacinth Alia has strongly condemned the abduction, describing it as "unacceptable." In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor stated that targeting innocent citizens—especially students—violates basic human and societal norms.
He assured residents that security agencies have launched coordinated operations and are actively pursuing the perpetrators. Search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of all abducted victims.
"We understand the anxiety and pain this incident has caused, particularly to parents whose children were among those abducted. We stand with you at this difficult time and assure you that everything humanly and operationally possible will be done to secure their safe release," the governor's statement added.
The escape of the two candidates brings a glimmer of hope, but the situation remains critical with 13 individuals still in captivity. Authorities continue to urge the public to provide any information that could aid in the rescue operations.
