Nigerians are celebrating a significant victory against terrorism following a successful aerial operation by the nation's security forces. A precision airstrike has resulted in the death of at least 23 armed bandits who were fleeing from military engagement in Kano State.
Coordinated Military Response Thwarts Terrorist Attacks
The incident began when groups of armed terrorists launched assaults on communities within the Shanono and Tsanyawa local government areas of Kano State. The attacks started on the night of Thursday, January 2, 2025, and continued into the early hours of Friday, January 3. In response, troops from the Joint Task Force (JTF), working closely with the Air Component of Operation Fansan Yamma, mobilized to counter the threat.
According to a statement issued on Sunday, January 4, 2025, by Major Zubairu Babatunde, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, the ground troops first engaged the assailants. The initial confrontation inflicted heavy casualties on the bandits, forcing a retreat. Utilizing superior intelligence and coordination, the security forces then tracked the fleeing terrorists as they attempted to escape the theater of operation.
Precision Airstrike Ends Pursuit in Katsina
Intelligence reports indicated that the surviving bandits had regrouped at Dan Marke in the Matazu Local Government Area of neighbouring Katsina State. Their purpose was to bury members killed during the earlier clash with troops. This gathering presented a critical target for the air component.
The Air Component of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, located and meticulously trailed the movement of the terrorists. The operatives monitored the group until their motorcycles converged at a spot after crossing a dry river bed in the Karaduwa village area. Seizing the opportunity, the Air Force executed a precision air strike on the location.
The result was decisive. The strike neutralized at least 23 terrorists on the spot. It is also believed that several other militants sustained varying degrees of injury from the operation. The mission, which was supported by aerial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, also led to the destruction of several weapons and equipment belonging to the criminal group.
A Boost for Counter-Terrorism Operations
This successful joint operation between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force underscores the effectiveness of coordinated, intelligence-driven military campaigns. The ability to track and engage fleeing terrorists across state lines demonstrates improved interoperability and persistence in the fight against insecurity in the North-West region.
The elimination of these 23 bandits provides much-needed relief to the affected communities in Kano and prevents the group from regrouping to launch further attacks. It serves as a strong message about the military's commitment to pursuing threats to national security relentlessly. Citizens have taken to social media to commend the troops for their vigilance and successful execution of the mission, hoping for more such victories in the ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry.
