Akwa Ibom launches 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance emblem

The Akwa Ibom State Government has officially commenced activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with the formal launch of its annual emblem and appeal fund. The ceremony, held at the Governor’s Office Annex in Uyo, underscores the state's unwavering dedication to the well-being of ex-servicemen, current military personnel, and the families of those who died in service.

Governor Eno's Tribute to Fallen Heroes

Governor Umo Eno, represented by his Deputy, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, described the annual event as a solemn occasion to honour the gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria's unity, peace, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that the remembrance extends beyond the Nigerian Civil War to include soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

"Every January, we are privileged to honour the memories of people who fought gallantly, preserved the territorial integrity of this nation and ensured the unity of this country with their blood," the Governor stated. He reiterated that January 15 is specifically reserved each year for this national honour.

Governor Eno explained that the launch of the emblem and fund provides a direct channel for the government and compassionate citizens to contribute financially to support army veterans and the families of deceased servicemen. He assured that his administration prioritizes peace, unity, and security as the bedrock for sustainable development, with the protection of lives and property being a core government responsibility.

Substantial Support for Veterans and Families

This event marks the third Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem launch since Governor Eno assumed office, highlighting his administration's consistent support. The Governor outlined several interventions aimed at improving the welfare of senior citizens and veterans, including:

  • The establishment of a Senior Citizens’ Centre.
  • Improved healthcare access via the state health insurance scheme and newly built Model Primary Healthcare centres.
  • The soon-to-be-operational Ibom International Hospital.
  • Clearing of gratuity backlogs and prompt payment of pensions.
  • Provision of monthly stipends and free medical services for selected senior citizens.

Governor Eno stated these actions are driven by a resolve to ensure that those who served the nation do not live or die in regret.

Statewide Activities and Call for Generosity

In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. (Mrs.) Inibehe Silas Etukudo, declared the launch as the official start of 2026 Remembrance Day activities in Akwa Ibom. She praised the sacrifices of fallen heroes, legionnaires, and serving personnel in both national and international peacekeeping operations.

The Commissioner commended Governor Eno for his steadfast support, noting that the state government disbursed ₦250 million last year as a welfare fund for military and paramilitary widows. She described the emblem and appeal fund as a symbol of collective appreciation and urged individuals, corporate bodies, and organizations to donate generously to support veterans, widows, and the families of fallen heroes.

Hon. Etukudo announced that the grand finale on January 15 will be held simultaneously across all local government areas. It will culminate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the State Cenotaph in Uyo, following Jumat prayers and an interdenominational service.

Legion's Appeal for Broader Support

The State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Akwa Ibom State Council, Captain Uwemedimo Bassey (Rtd), expressed gratitude for recent empowerment programmes for military widows. However, he appealed for expanded support for veterans and their families, calling on the government and the organized private sector to consider initiatives in:

  • Improved healthcare services.
  • Employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Educational scholarships.
  • Housing assistance.
  • Counselling services for veterans.

The ceremony featured the inspection of a Legion formation and the decoration of the Governor’s representative and other dignitaries with the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem. Attendees included government officials, service commanders, serving and retired military officers, legionnaires, local government council chairmen, and other distinguished stakeholders.
