Nigerian Army Establishes New Bases in Kwara, Niger to Combat Banditry
Army Sets Up New Bases in Kwara, Niger to Flush Out Criminals

The Nigerian Army has significantly increased its presence in the North Central region by setting up new military installations in Kwara and Niger states. This strategic move aims to intensify the fight against criminal elements, including bandits and kidnappers, operating in the area.

Expansion of Military Footprint

Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, the Commander of the Headquarters 22 Armoured Brigade, announced the establishment of the new bases. He made the disclosure on Saturday, January 10, 2026, during the 2025 Nigerian Army Social Activities held at the Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to General Rume, the brigade has been actively conducting clearance operations throughout 2025. These operations target criminal hideouts in border communities and dense forest areas that connect Kwara and Niger states.

Key Operations and New Base Locations

The military's efforts have included major initiatives like Operations Park Strike IV and V. These missions focused on the Kainji Lake National Park and surrounding villages, as well as parts of Borgu Local Government Area in Niger State and Kaiama and Baruten LGAs in Kwara State.

Other significant campaigns are Operation Harmony in Kwara State and the currently ongoing Operation Fansan Yamma. To provide solid support for these missions, the Army has established Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Patigi and Ilemona. Additionally, new patrol bases are now operational in Babasango, Gada, and Daban Lema.

"These bases complement our operations in neighbouring states and enhance our response to security threats," Brigadier General Rume explained. The deployment is a direct response to the persistent challenges of terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery plaguing the North Central zone.

Government and Military Collaboration

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, reaffirmed the state's commitment to partnering with the military. Represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, retired Brigadier General Saliu Bello, the governor praised the existing collaboration.

"The collaboration between the military and the state government has yielded positive results, and I want to reassure you of my unwavering commitment to this partnership," Governor AbdulRazaq stated. He also acknowledged the support of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Armed Forces.

Brigadier General Rume concluded with an assurance of the brigade's readiness. "I assure you all of the readiness of 22 Armoured Brigade to collaborate with all security agencies towards achieving peace and security in our area of responsibility," he said. The Nigerian Army Social Activities event serves as an annual platform to foster interaction among personnel and assess operational progress.
