Colonel and Six Soldiers Killed in Borno Ambush by Suspected Boko Haram Insurgents

Suspected Boko Haram members have killed a colonel, Col. I.A. Mohammed, and six soldiers of the Nigerian Army during an ambush in Monguno, Borno state on April 12. The incident was confirmed by the media information officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Sani Uba, who stated that the attack occurred while the officers were responding to an earlier assault on a military formation.

Details of the Attack and Military Response

Uba explained that the insurgents launched an attack on troops at the Charlie 13 location on Sunday night, April 12, but were repelled after a fierce gun battle. The commanding officer, Col. Mohammed, was proceeding to the troops' location to personally assess the situation when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion severely damaged the vehicle, leading to his death alongside six soldiers.

In a statement, Uba praised the colonel's actions, noting that they reflected the highest traditions of military leadership. He emphasized Col. Mohammed's courage, selfless service, and commitment to leading from the front, even after the immediate threat had been neutralized. Uba described the officer's willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of battle as a profound testament to his valour and sense of duty.

Mourning and Tribute to the Fallen Heroes

Operation HADIN KAI has expressed deep mourning over the loss of Col. Mohammed and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation. Uba stated that their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served. The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, coming just days after a separate terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno state, which resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and two officers, including Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah of the 29 Brigade.

This tragic event underscores the persistent threats faced by Nigerian military forces in the fight against insurgency in the North-East. The bravery and sacrifice of these personnel serve as a reminder of the high stakes involved in maintaining national security and stability.
