The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has declared that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will stand firm against any force that threatens the nation's democratic peace and stability. He made this declaration during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner held on Wednesday, 15 January 2026.
Whole-of-Society Approach is Key
While emphasizing the military's unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and all forms of criminality, General Oluyede presented a crucial caveat. He stated that the military alone cannot shoulder the entire burden of preserving Nigeria's national heritage.
"The way forward lies in a whole-of-society approach, which is embodied in my military strategic philosophy for the Armed Forces of Nigeria," the CDS explained. He stressed the necessity of building strong relationships with local communities and enhancing collaboration with sister security agencies to achieve lasting security.
Honouring Fallen Heroes and Winning Hearts
General Oluyede paid solemn tribute to the nation's fallen heroes, describing Remembrance Day as a time to honour the brave men and women of the armed forces. "We must never forget that the foundation of our freedom was laid by the sacrifices of our forebears," he remarked, doffing the nation's hat to their courage and selfless service.
He also highlighted the significant progress made by troops in winning public trust. Despite daunting challenges, he noted that the armed forces have continued to prevail, bridging the gap with civilians and replacing distrust with confidence and pride.
Minister Musa Echoes Sentiments on Military Heritage
In his own remarks, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), described the event as more than a ceremony, calling it the "heartbeat of Nigeria’s military heritage." He used the occasion to celebrate the professionalism and resilience of serving personnel while remembering those who paid the supreme price.
Minister Musa praised Nigerian troops for confronting complex asymmetric threats with courage under extremely demanding conditions. He attributed the relative peace and security enjoyed in parts of the country to their vigilance, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication.
The regimental dinner served as both a reflective and inspirational event. General Oluyede concluded by urging the armed forces family to let the evening renew their sense of purpose and inspire continued service with honour, professionalism, and selfless devotion to Nigeria.
