NEDC Distributes Food and Building Materials to Boko Haram Victims in Borno
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has initiated a significant relief effort by distributing tonnes of food items and building materials to victims affected by recent multiple bomb blasts in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. This intervention aims to support vulnerable individuals impacted by Boko Haram insurgency, providing essential resources to help displaced persons and survivors rebuild their lives.
Emergency Response to Alleviate Suffering
According to the Commission, the donated materials include thousands of bags and bales of food items, clothing, and critical building supplies. The NEDC Managing Director, represented by State Coordinator Mohammed Wasinda, presented these items for distribution on Tuesday in Maiduguri. He emphasized that this effort is part of the Commission's emergency response mandate to alleviate the sufferings of citizens following isolated attacks in various local councils across Borno State.
Specific Items Donated for Victims
Wasinda highlighted the critical interventions, detailing that the items earmarked for victims of the Maiduguri multiple blasts comprise:
- 2,000 bags of rice
- 2,000 cartons of spaghetti
- 2,000 blankets
In addition to food and blankets, the Commission donated substantial building materials to aid in reconstruction efforts:
- 1,000 bundles of roofing sheets
- 5,000 pieces of ceiling boards
- 10,000 pieces of timber
- 2,000 iron rods
- 8,000 packets of nails
Coordination and Distribution Channels
Wasinda directed the Chairpersons of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Council to coordinate the distribution of these materials through state channels. He further urged that all food and materials be handed over to the Borno State Government via the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). SEMA will manage the onward delivery to ensure the resources reach households most impacted by the blasts and recent security breaches.
Cash Assistance for Verified Victims
Beyond physical commodities, the NEDC has verified a list of more than 150 victims and survivors of the Maiduguri bombings for cash assistance. The Commission has finalized data capturing for affected individuals, with specific support plans:
- Families of deceased victims will receive N50,000 each as a funeral grant and immediate support.
- Injured survivors will receive N30,000 each to assist with medical or personal needs.
Extended Relief to Other Affected Communities
The distribution plan extends beyond Maiduguri to cover other affected communities, including Konduga, Gwoza, and Kukawa local councils, as well as Ngoshe, a border community with Cameroon. Items for these three councils include:
- 1,800 bags of rice
- 1,800 cartons of spaghetti
- Thousands of units of mats and wrappers
These supplies will be handed over to respective local council chairmen and members of the state's House of Assembly for distribution, ensuring a comprehensive approach to relief efforts across the region.
